The Future Looks Grim

Last week we were shocked to learn that Frank Darabont left The Walking Dead after having enthusiastically promoted the show only days before at Comic-Con. Clearly, something unpleasant was afoot behind the scenes.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the problem might stem from money being poured into AMC’s flagship show Mad Men. A renegotiated contract lead to a pay hike for its creator and executive producer Matt Weiner to the tune of $10 million per season—with no budget cuts to the show.

Meanwhile, the budget for The Walking Dead has been slashed $250,000 per episode and Breaking Bad’s season five show order has been reduced to six or eight from thirteen—prompting Sony Television (the studio behind the show) to consider selling it to another network.

Interestingly enough, The Walking Dead handily surpasses both shows in terms of viewership. It averaged 6 million viewers per episode during its first season while Mad Men averaged 4.3 million last season and Breaking Bad 2.3 million this year.

AMC president Charlie Collier had this to say on The Walking Dead budget cuts:

“If you look at pilot budgets vs. pattern budgets usually the pilot budget is much higher than what ends up being the pattern budget. With The Walking Dead, instead of doing a pilot, we went straight to 6 episodes because we believed in the team and the talent in front and behind the camera. Then we came back with a 13-episode second season, and amortization over 13 episodes is very different than over 6. But we settled into one of the highest pattern budgets for a basic cable series,” said Collier.

Still, it seems counterintuitive to take anything away from a show that is clearly AMC’s biggest hit. I like Mad Men, but The Walking Dead should be their top priority—and they may have lost the show’s driving force because they don’t have their priorities in order.

Dead Island – What about a Cruise Instead?!

I don’t even know where to start with this trailer. It’s done very well, so well that it makes you just stare at your monitor in awe. The eye on the little girl is unreal, the blood and gore is great. Anything, zombie is always good but, to see a video game no less do something like this is quite amazing. Now if the game is anything like this is still to be seen but we can only hope. If you can axe some poor bell hop in the neck it’s pre-order time!!

Re-Kill

It’s been 5 years since the outbreak that wiped out 85% of the world’s population, but the war between Re-Animates (Re-Ans) and Humans wages on. Most of the major cities are still uninhabitable. Within the few surviving cities, the Re-Ans have been segregated into “zones” and are policed by the R-Division of the QUASI S.W.A.T. Unit who hunt to re-kill the Re-Ans in the hope of quelling a second outbreak.

“R-Division, Frontline” is America’s #1 TV show in this Post-Apocalyptic world. Weekly, the show follows different R-Division units on the battlefield as they work to keep America Safe and Re-An free. Jimmy, the videographer for the Outbreak Network, thought this week’s episode would be like every other. He was wrong. Through the lens of his eyes and camera, we see raw, revealed and uncut, that which could be mankind’s last day.

The footage you are about to see is graphic and disturbing and may not be suitable for children. Viewer discretion is highly advised. Here

Penny Arcade Me

I haven’t updated the blog in a while. I haven’t really been busy, but I haven’t really been doing a lot of creative things either. So I did this sketch a while ago. I wanted to make me look like the Penny Arcade

characters, but keep my style in there some where. I think I did a decent job, I can do a lot more to it. Like add a background, or hands. I love vector art more and more, every time I use Illustrator.

The 8 Eeriest Episodes of Eerie, Indiana

So one of my favorite shows as a kid. I watched this so much and was very disappointed when it only ran one season. When I ask people if they have ever seen this show I get looks of puzzlement for every single one of them. It’s nice to know that someone besides me knew it existed, none the less watched and enjoyed it too. So head over to topless robot to see all 8 videos of the eeriest episodes of Eerie Indiana.

AMC Beauty Tips from The Walking Dead

AMC has released another behind-the-scenes featurette from The Walking Dead, this time examining the fascinating work that went into creating the make-up effects for the first zombie that will appear on the show. What’s so great about this clip is the old-school make-up work that is being done on the series. The classic techniques on display above would be just as home on an 1983 episode of Standby: Lights, Camera, Action as they are here.Topless Robot – Beauty Tips from the Walking Dead.

Fight Club Book Cover

The First Rule of Fight Club is..
So not having a steady job to go to everyday I have to keep myself busy. One way I do this is make up projects for myself to do. So staring at my movie collection, I figured why not try to redo some book covers and movie posters. I did one in college and to say the least it wasn’t very good at all. So that one, along with a few others I plan on redoing. The first one is by one of my favorite authors, Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. My buddy Hayden Bennett was kind enough to take some stock pictures of me. And aided me in making some fake blood as well.
