The Future Looks Grim

Last week we were shocked to learn that Frank Darabont left The Walking Dead after having enthusiastically promoted the show only days before at Comic-Con. Clearly, something unpleasant was afoot behind the scenes.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the problem might stem from money being poured into AMC’s flagship show Mad Men. A renegotiated contract lead to a pay hike for its creator and executive producer Matt Weiner to the tune of $10 million per season—with no budget cuts to the show.

Meanwhile, the budget for The Walking Dead has been slashed $250,000 per episode and Breaking Bad’s season five show order has been reduced to six or eight from thirteen—prompting Sony Television (the studio behind the show) to consider selling it to another network.

Interestingly enough, The Walking Dead handily surpasses both shows in terms of viewership. It averaged 6 million viewers per episode during its first season while Mad Men averaged 4.3 million last season and Breaking Bad 2.3 million this year.

AMC president Charlie Collier had this to say on The Walking Dead budget cuts:

“If you look at pilot budgets vs. pattern budgets usually the pilot budget is much higher than what ends up being the pattern budget. With The Walking Dead, instead of doing a pilot, we went straight to 6 episodes because we believed in the team and the talent in front and behind the camera. Then we came back with a 13-episode second season, and amortization over 13 episodes is very different than over 6. But we settled into one of the highest pattern budgets for a basic cable series,” said Collier.

Still, it seems counterintuitive to take anything away from a show that is clearly AMC’s biggest hit. I like Mad Men, but The Walking Dead should be their top priority—and they may have lost the show’s driving force because they don’t have their priorities in order.

The 8 Eeriest Episodes of Eerie, Indiana

So one of my favorite shows as a kid. I watched this so much and was very disappointed when it only ran one season. When I ask people if they have ever seen this show I get looks of puzzlement for every single one of them. It’s nice to know that someone besides me knew it existed, none the less watched and enjoyed it too. So head over to topless robot to see all 8 videos of the eeriest episodes of Eerie Indiana.

The Least Practical, Most Awesome Zombie Weapon Ever

Topless Robot – The Least Practical, Most Awesome Zombie Weapon Ever.

So if any of you were wondering what to pick up for my bday. THIS! And form of this would be the best present, ok pretty close to a years membership to Craft Beer of the Month Club (thx family!) but awesome none the less. Here’s the OG post from Unreality.com The link is to Topless Robot, a great Nerd Blog.

It’s the greatest weapon possibly ever conceived, the RPC, or Rocket Propelled Chainsaw.  Yes, it is EXACTLY what it sounds like, and provided you have an unlimited amount of chainsaws, you’ll be the zombie killing champion of the post-apocalyptic world.

I’m frankly surprised such a device hasn’t shown up in a game or a movie yet, but there’s still hope for Dead Rising 3, which literally attaches chainsaws to everything you could possibly imagine. I’m pretty sure the protagonist of that game will literally have chainsaws for arms, legs and a head, with a secret compartment in his chest…for another chainsaw.

More Walking Dead Photos

Bracken over at The Horror Geek posted this some time ago. I haven’t kept up with the blog as much as I would have liked. So here is some more stuff to fill your zombie needs!

Sorry for the long delay between posts — I’ve been doing a lot of stuff over at Horror Squad (and if you’re not checking me out there, you should be — it’s extra content) and I’ve not had a bunch of free time. I’m back today though, with more Walking Dead goodness.

Pictured above is the first production photo from AMC’s new series — based on Robert Kirkman’s comic set after the zombie apocalypse. Greg Nicotero of the mighty KNB Effects did the zombie design and it looks amazing. Director Frank Darabont concurs, saying “Greg Nicotero is absolutely out-doing himself. The work he is doing is beyond what one could hope for. Our Zombies kick ass!”

The series is set to debut on AMC later this year.

First Look Behind the Scenes of AMC’s The Walking Dead

Good old Mike Bracken made a post earlier today about AMC’s behind the scenes look of “The Walking Dead”. Due to come out this October, they are filming now in Atlanta, GA. Check out Mike’s post here at The Horror Geek.

A director that’s always wanted to do Zombies, and pays homage to Romero. So far this thing can’t go wrong. But like all things that are really awesome in one medium can’t always be expressed in another. So with fingers crossed among other things, I can’t hardly wait til October to get here to see. But enough talk, check out the video Here!!

An Angel to Replace A Fox

Replacing Megan Fox in Transformers 3
With a “Go Get ‘Em Rosie!”, Victoria’s Secret posted a video last night (May 31) congratulating one of its Angels, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, as The Babe in forthcoming “Transformers 3.” Though no official announcement has been made from Camp Michael Bay, it seems that the 23-year-old Secret bearer will be replacing Megan Fox, who exited the film last month.

With great pride and in 1:35, the lingerie-maker highlighted Huntington-Whiteley’s acting reel, from her critical best “The Runway” to her biggest box office success, “Smiling, With Wings.”Just kidding. It’s a bunch of shots of the model in her underwear.

Huntington-Whitely seems to have no Hollywood acting experience but may bud as an actress while being pursued by giant robots and, more than likely, Shia LaBeouf.Production has will begun in July of 2011; the first two films have raked in more than $1.5 billion globally.

Hey Negrita: Zombie Music Video Trilogy

Don't ever leave your back to a door!
British Country Rock band Hey Negrita had UK based animation studio Pew36 make a short film that spans three of their songs. Pew36 describe the video as:

A music video trilogy for Hey Negrita’s tracks ‘One Mississippi’, ‘Nine to Five’ & ‘Burn the Whole Place Down’. The brief was to create 3 music videos which hold their own but can also work as a long format piece. This award winning animation has screened all round the world and has something for everyone.

Let’s see the undead, check. Your friends getting turned and you have to kill them, check. Scantly clad woman running in the darkness, check. Buckets of blood, double check. Using random items as weapons to defend yourself, check. Yup I think this one has it all. Check out the full video at Pew36’s website or the 3 separate videos on Dailymotion. And if you liked that sort of music check out the bands Facebook page.
